Image

At the end of each school year, our faculty and staff vote on Teacher and Support Employee of the Year for the upcoming school year. These are two awards chosen at the school level to honor one outstanding teacher and one amazing support employee for their hard work, dedication to education and children, and for displaying exceptional teamwork. Six Mile Elementary is proud to announce Mrs. Erin Hunter, 5th Grade Teacher, as our Teacher of the Year and Mrs. Sharon Durham, Secretary/Bookkeeper, as our Support Employee for 2012-2013 school year.

Congratulations Ladies!  Image

Important Information About Attendance And Tardies
One of the most important things parents can do is make sure that their child(ren) attends school regularly. While some absences for illness are unavoidable, nothing can replace the educational, cultural and social contacts that students experience through regular participation in class. Students with good attendance achieve more than students who are often absent. Attendance is also a major criterion in promoting a student. According to state law, students must attend a minimum of 180 days of school a year. Of these 180 days, students cannot miss more than 10 days including excused and unexcused absences. If a school is closed due to inclement weather, the school year may be extended to allow students to make up the missed days.

Reasons for excused absences are:
Illness
Death in the immediate family
Recognized religious holidays
Pre-arranged absences (if absences will result in a cumulative total less than 10 and the request is received in advance.)
Things To Do If Your Child Is Ever Absent
Students/Parents must provide a written excuse (within 3 days of an absence, or if the student has several continuous absences – within 3 days after the student’s return to school) from a parent, guardian or health practitioner for ALL absences other than those approved by the principal for a school-sponsored activity.

A valid excuse must:
be dated,
list the student’s full name,
contain the date(s) of the absence(s),
list the reason for the absence(s),
list a telephone number of the parent (if needed for verification)
Tardies
Parents should have students at school on time each day. Late students miss important instruction and create a disruption in the class when arriving late. Late arrival (tardiness) results in interruptions to the learning process – not only for the tardy student but for the other students in the class as well. Constant tardiness may be referred to the Director of Student Services for further action.
In summary, a student must provide a written excuse from a parent, guardian or health care provider for ALL absences. Excuses should be turned in no latter than three days after the student returns to school.
An Attendance Intervention Plan conference , required by district policy and state attendance regulations, will be conducted for every student who accumulates 3 consecutive unexcused absences or a total of 5 unexcused absences.
After 10 absences, a medical excuse is required.
For questions about attendance or tardies, contact Tom Erlandson, assistant principal, at 397-2411.
