CENTRAL, S.C. – Students, staff, community members, and local leaders gathered at D.W. Daniel High School this week to celebrate the dedication of a brand new Outdoor Classroom—a project spearheaded by class of 2025 graduate Ashby Williams as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award.
The dedication ceremony, held on campus, marked the culmination of a two-year journey for Williams. What began as a bold idea became a transformative reality thanks to her vision, perseverance, and the support of school leadership and the greater Clemson community.
“This classroom started as something I thought was very far-fetched,” said Williams during her remarks. “But as soon as I began collaborating with members of this community, I found nothing but open arms and willing hands. This project, which once felt daunting, became one of the most formative experiences of my life.”
Williams extended heartfelt thanks to many who made the space possible, including the D.W. Daniel admin team—Mr. Russell, Mr. Culpepper, Mrs. Martin, Mr. Lepa, Coach Wichelns, and Mr. Salina—for their encouragement and advocacy. She also recognized Mr. Yoder, whose time and construction expertise were instrumental in bringing the vision to life.
Funding for the Outdoor Classroom was made possible by many Clemson area organizations. Williams recognized the support of the Clemson Sunrise and Noon Rotary Clubs, who collectively donated over $1,500 to the project. Special appreciation was extended to Mrs. Karen Carter of Rotary Noon, who went above and beyond in supporting the fundraising efforts.
In addition, Williams acknowledged the role of D.W. Daniel’s Interact Club and its advisors—Mr. Conrad, Mrs. Chandler, and Mrs. Rushing—for their commitment to maintaining the space through ongoing clean-up and stewardship.
The Outdoor Classroom, now open to all students and staff, is intended to be a flexible learning environment that fosters engagement and connection beyond the traditional walls of the school building.
“From the beginning, this space has always been for you and your students,” Williams said in her closing remarks, addressing the faculty directly. “I hope that this becomes a place where students write, discuss, calculate, rehearse, and connect. I hope that you, as teachers, see a reflection of yourselves in this beautiful space.”
The Outdoor Classroom has been formally dedicated to the teachers of D.W. Daniel High School.
